Are you planning to have that exciting hiking outdoor adventure? Here are a couple of tips to help ensure that your hiking adventure is as amazing as you have planned it to be!
- Snacks – Hiking burns many calories and you need fuel to keep your body going with the trek. High protein snacks will keep your body moving. Look for lightweight, easy to pack and “take on the go” snacks that will not melt in hot temperatures or squish in your bag.
- Stay Hydrated – Water is essential. Make sure to always pack more than you think you will need.
- Dress in Layers – The weather can always change throughout the day. Have layers that are lightweight so you can pack the layers as the day warms up. Also ensure not to wear cotton clothing – it will keep moisture on your skin and can give you a chill.
- Wear Proper Footwear – Nothing will slow you down more than a blister or footwear that does not give the proper support or grip you need.
- Emergency Kit – Hiking emergency kits are sold at many sporting stores. Go with Murphy’s law if you pack a kit then hopefully you will not need to use it!
- Safety Items – Always pack matches or lighter that can start a fire. Also carry a flashlight and a whistle, just in case the sun sets before you make your way back.
- Multi-Purpose Knife/Tool - These knives have multiple useful tools packed into a small device. It could be a life saver and it takes up very little room in your bag.
- Map and Compass – Cell phone coverage is not always plentiful on many hiking trails. Carry a map of the area and a compass to ensure you are heading in the right direction.
- Tell a Friend – When mapping out a hiking trip, make sure to give your exact plans to a family member or friend that is not hiking with you. This way if there is a search, rescuers have a place to start.
- Leave no Trace – Keep the hiking trail exactly how you found it. Allow others and yourself to enjoy the trails for years to come!
